Alfred University, or AU for short, is a small, comprehensive university in Alfred, which is a village located in the Town of Alfred in Allegany County, in the US state of New York, with nearly 4000 people, living within its limits, as estimated during the 2000 census.
The university was established in 1836, by Seventh Day Baptists, and first started as a non-sectarian institution called the Select School. It is the second oldest co-educational college in the United States and one of the earliest nineteenth century colleges to have enrolled African American and Native American students.
Alfred currently offers its students over 40 undergraduate majors/programs, including internships, research and study abroad opportunities in the following schools and colleges: College of Business, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, New York State College of Ceramics, School of Art and Design, Kazuo Inamori School of Engineering and The Graduate School.
Alfred's athletic teams are known as the AU Saxons, and they compete in 21 NCAA Division III sports and two IHSA sports. Their distinctive colors are purple and gold.
Among the noteworthy graduates from AU, there are also: Biomedical engineer Samuel Hulbert, pioneer in ceramic devices and president of Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology, Award-winning ceramic artist Robert Archambeau, Librarian Melvil Dewey (attended, but did not graduate), creator of the Dewey Decimal System, and Peter Cuneo, Chairman of Cuneo and Co., and Marvel Enterprises, Inc.
